The VW Golf has been a popular mainstay in the brand lineup for literally as long as we can remember. After seven generations and 40 years on the market, to say its good reputation is entrenched might be an understatement. However, it’s never been better than it is right now—and VW is still looking for new and exciting ways to improve on the Golf formula.
For example, a very special 400-horsepower VW Golf might soon be coming down the pike, according to the brand itself. The automaker first introduced the Golf R400 Concept at last year’s Beijing Motor Show, but now it’s looking to bring that concept to production. “We’re in front of a decision to produce it, and I personally think we have a good prospect to do it,” said Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen’s technical chief, talking to Autocar.
The production vehicle will easily be the most powerful Golf model to date, taking a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to newly turbochaged levels. It’s a great time for VW to explore this new vehicle too. The Golf is a hot topic, as the Golf and Golf GTI took home the coveted North American Car of the Year award at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. Come see us at Sierra Volkswagen to learn more!
