Classic Volkswagen Bus Sells for Six-Figures

classic Volkswagen bus

Who knew that a classic Volkswagen bus could sell for a ‘groovy’ six-figure sum? The 1960 VW Type 2 Kombi 23-window Samba sold at an Australian auction for $157,000 at the end of February.

Restored to look like new, the two-toned white-and-dark-red 1960 Samba features a 1.6-liter engine capable of 30 hp mated to a four-speed manual transmission; a characteristic retractable fabric roof; bench-like seating for nine passengers, 23 windows, including its signature divided front-open windows; chrome hubcaps; and pie-sized VW chrome logo.

Symbolized as the epitome of 1960s counter culture, Samba values have continued to rise over the past few years due to an emotional appeal to collectors. In fact, this recent Australian transaction is not the highest sales figure that a microbus has reached. Last November, a German auction garnered $235,000 for a pristine 1955 VW minibus, while in 2011 one sold for $218,000 in a California auction.
